One of the attractions of Vanadzor is Tairov’s country house. Do you know who Tairov is and why did he have such a house?

Vasily Tairov lived in the city of Karakilisa (now Vanadzor) in the middle of the 19th century. He was a famous winemaker, doctor of agricultural sciences, founder and editor-in-chief of the journal “News of Winemaking ”. In 1903 Tairov became the vice-president of the International Organization of Grape Wines, and in 1905 he headed the first experimental winery of the Russian Empire. He is considered the founder of champagne production in the Russian Empire.

Tairov’s country house was built in 1895. During the Soviet years, the building functioned as “Hayastan” sanatorium. Since 1999, the building has been reconstructed for the Gugark patriarchy. On the territory of the building you can see khachkars of the 12-13th centuries, brought from different places.
